FAQs About

Buying / Investing

Why do some fine wines go up in value?

Due to limited supply each year, as supply diminishes, demand generally rises alongside value as the wine matures.

Do I need to know a lot about wine before I invest?

We strongly recommend seeking advice when investing in wine as not all well-known wines are suitable for investment. Get in touch with our expert team today.

What sort of fine wines should I invest in?

We advise to only ever invest in the top wines of Bordeaux and a handful of wines from Burgundy. To learn more, contact our specialist team today.

What are the risks?

Just like any other Investment, there will always be a risk as investment values are dependant on the market; where prices can go up as well as down. Only buy from established merchants and ensure you get the expertise needed.

What are the advantages of investing in fine wine?

You are investing in a tangible, improving asset that has a limited production but a huge global demand base. The supply of this already limited asset then declines over the years as the wines are consumed.

What does En Primeur mean?

Buying wine “en primeur” refers to the process of buying wine before it is bottled and released to the market. This principally applies to the best wines from Bordeaux, Burgundy and The Rhône. The wine is generally shipped to the UK in the year or two after purchase. Duty and VAT only become payable when the wine is taken out of bond and delivered.

What are the TAX advantages in investing in wine?

There are a number of tax advantages to fine wine investment. Fine wine is classified by HMRC as a ‘wasting’ asset. As a result, it is free from capital gains tax (CGT) liabilities. Get in touch with our experts to learn more.

FAQs About

Selling / Storing

Can I sell my wines to you directly?

Yes of course! We are always looking to expand our stock holding and will look to do our best to price match any offer available to you in the market. Get a free valuation today.

Can I store my wines with you?

Yes, we offer secure storage facilities. Storing wine is a key factor when considering buying wine to hold and sell. It is important now more than ever when buying and storing wine that they are stored in there original wooden cases (OWC) and are stored in bond (IB) as this helps to establish provenance of the wine.

Ensuring that your wine is stored in the best conditions for maturing is an absolute must! Contact our team today to learn more.

How do I know if I am getting the best valuation?

Though our vast network of brokers and merchants, we use the latest valuation tools which give an instant valuation based on the current UK market prices. Our team scours the market daily, comparing UK wine merchant prices to provide the most accurate valuation available to achieve the best prices.

How do I know when is the best time to sell?

Generally there isn’t a ‘best time’ to sell. Wine is a fairly liquid market and while outside circumstances might affect the market, prices are usually stable. Our clients usually sell when they are looking to cash in for the money or when they have run out of storage room.
